Constance Wu has forgiven the fellow Asian actor who she said called her a “disgrace” to the community, a part of the backlash that Wu says drove her to attempt suicide three years ago.
During an interview on Meghan Markle’s “Archetypes” podcast, the “Crazy Rich Asians” star spoke about the social media backlash she experienced in 2019 due to her reaction to the renewal of her ABC sitcom, “Fresh Off the Boat.”
Wu posted tweets expressing her dismay at the sixth season’s announcement, which many then interpreted as her being ungrateful
Speaking with Markle, Wu acknowledged how her message may have been perceived: “When I tweeted all this stuff without context, it made me seem really ungrateful and petty, and bratty, I guess is a word a lot of people used.”
The resulting social media outrage prompted Wu to take a three-year Twitter hiatus. When she returned to social media in July this year, she revealed that the backlash then was so severe that she attempted suicide.
“It took a DM from an actress colleague of mine, an Asian actress, who basically said that I had become a disgrace to my race and that, you know, I was basically better off dead,” Wu told Markle. “It made me feel like I didn’t deserve to be alive anymore. And I tried to end my own life, and luckily, I had a friend who was able to get me to the ER.”
While Wu said she has not reconnected with the unnamed actor, she shared that she has already forgiven her.
“You know, I do forgive her for it. I do,” she said. “Because I know that anybody who is trying so hard to be a certain way is going through their own battle. I’d probably get emotional if I saw her, but I think I would be able to really stand well on my own two feet.”
Wu has been keeping herself busy, having released her new memoir “Making a Scene” and starring in recent projects such as “The Terminal List” and “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” among others.
