Popular Dating App Says Hong Kong Singles Are the ‘World’s Most Desperate’ People

Data from the popular dating app Coffee Meets Bagel suggests that singles in Hong Kong are the most desperate to find love.

Daters in Hong Kong apparently use the San Francisco-based dating app more often than those in other parts of the world. According to data collected from the app, 66% of users in Hong Kong log onto Coffee Meets Bagel everyday.

Times are changing and it seems that some people are looking for meaningful long term relationships than they are one-night stands with no strings attached. Coffee Meets Bagel, which was founded in 2012, prides itself on being the antidote to hookup apps like Tinder.

Since expanding to Hong Kong in March of last year, Coffee Meets Bagel claims to be responsible for 2.5 billion introductions, according to South China Morning Post. One of the co-founding sisters of the smartphone app, Dawoon Kang, said that CMB is for “singles looking for real relationships — not browsing, not entertainment, not hook up.”

Kang is no stranger to the Hong Kong dating scene. She lived and dated in Hong Kong before returning to the United States a few years ago. The co-founder revealed:

“Hong Kong was the first market we targeted outside the US, with close to two million singles; that was a huge draw for us.”

Coffee Meets Bagel differentiates itself from other dating apps by advertising itself as a more serious alternative. It filters users based on education, interests and religion to find suitable matches.

The app boasts its ability to make 13,000 matches and 600 dates happen every week in Hong Kong. All together, Coffee Meets Bagel has been the matchmaker for 250 couples since launching there.

Surprisingly, data also indicates that Hong Kong women are more forward than women in the United States. That may be explained by the fact that Hong Kong has a dense population with a high female-to-male ratio. As in many other parts of the world, women in Hong Kong place a strong emphasis on education, profession and expressed level of commitment while men in Hong Kong highly value appearances.

Singles in Hong Kong aren’t the only ones looking for love. The sexiest doctor alive was also a potential match on Coffee Meets Bagel not too long ago.
