Chinese Woman Distracted By Texting on Her Phone Drowns After Falling into a Canal

If you’ve ever been annoyed by other people cautioning you to put down your cell phone while you are doing other things, a disturbing new video may change your feelings.
CC cameras caught a Chinese woman who was distracted by her cell phone falling into a canal and drowning, according to Central European News (via Mirror Online).
For over a minute after falling in, the 28-year-old, who did not know how to swim, can be seen in the black and white footage trying desperately to stay afloat in the shallow canal in Houyang Village, located in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.
The woman, surnamed Wang, was reportedly on her way home last week when the accident occurred. Her husband is reported to have thought his wife had stayed overnight with a friend but discovered that was not the case when he learned the next morning that his wife’s shoes had been discovered floating downstream.

If this happened on campus, Stanford should issue a clear public update and specific safety actions.

Agree. People need facts and process, not silence. The school should confirm what is being investigated.

Also important to separate verified details from rumors so this does not spiral online.

The death threat part is extremely serious. Hoping law enforcement and campus security are already involved.

This is where official reporting and support channels need to be visible and easy to access.
