Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and his girlfriend, pop star Wanting Qu, have officially broken up, as confirmed by the office of the mayor.
According to SCMP, the mayor’s office revealed on Thursday that the pair “are no longer together,” noting that “They ended their relationship in May”.
The 52-year-old Canadian politician and 33-year-old Vancouver-based, Chinese-born singer made their relationship public back in January 2015. It was six months after the mayor had announced his separation from Amy Robertson, who was his wife of more than 25 years.
Qu, whose mother is currently facing a possible death penalty for corruption charges in China, recently posted on Twitter: “We wish nothing but happiness and success for each other and continue to be close friends. Love.”
The accusation that her mom, former local government official Qu Zhang Mingjie, embezzled 350 million yuan ($52 million) in a real estate scam became highly publicized back in July 2016. Qu’s mother has since denied the charges.
While the Harbin City Intermediate People’s Court has yet to issue a ruling, prosecutors have been asking for the 61-year-old former official to be executed.
Wanting Qu issued a statement on Chinese social media platform Weibo last week, saying that she is positive her mom will get a fair ruling. She noted that the court’s long period of consideration meant that “ the court is handling the case very carefully, and the views of the defense are important”.
So far, China’s courts have had a 99.9 % conviction rate, as stated in China Law Yearbook.
