A 12-year-old boy who is paralyzed from the waist down has gone viral for requesting a gift for his stepmother as a reward for his stellar performance on a recent exam.
What happened: The heartwarming, wholesome moment was filmed by the boy’s stepmother, surnamed Yu, while she picked him up from school in Anhui province, China, on June 17.
The Douyin video starts with Yu waiting to pick up Hanhan from school. He approaches her while driving his self-propelled PlasmaCar, then tells Yu that he received a top score on an exam.
After Yu asks Hanhan what he wants as a reward, the boy tells her that he only wishes for a portable fan so that she can use it to beat the summer heat while she delivers his lunch to him at school.
Touched by the boy’s words, Yu says, “The little sapling I planted has now grown up.”
Becoming a family: Yu reportedly married into the boy’s family after his birth mother abandoned him and his sister when he was only 3 years old. Yu has stayed by his side for years, taking care of his needs and accompanying him to his hospital visits for consultations.
According to Yu, Hanhan became paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a botched test that damaged his nerves after he was misdiagnosed with a rare type of cancer when he was only a few months old.
Going viral: Yu’s video, which captured the hearts of millions online, went viral with 60 million views in just two days.
