Chinese Man Waits in Hospital for Wife to Give Birth — Accidentally Gets Hemorrhoid Surgery

In a case of mistaken identity, an expectant father awaiting the delivery of his newborn baby at a hospital ward in China was accidentally given a hemorrhoid operation.
Mr. Wang, the unfortunate recipient of the free, surprise surgery, was reportedly mistaken for a patient who was expecting to be operated on after having completed the paperwork for the procedure last week, according to People’s Daily.
When Wang was invited by the doctors at the Shenyang Hunnan Xinqu Hospital to go with them, he thought they were bringing him in where his wife was and assist them with his baby’s birth. Having only two operating rooms in the entire hospital probably added to the confusion.
According to Daily Mail, once inside the other operating room, the man was told to remove his pants and lie down on the operating table.
“It felt strange, and I asked why,” he was quoted as saying. “They said: “Just do what we tell you”.”
The doctors then applied some anesthetic and operated on hemorrhoids he didn’t even know he had.
“I really never knew I had hemorrhoids,” Wang said.
“When I was on the operating table I heard a baby crying and I was very happy, and I wanted to hold it but I couldn’t move because I started to feel pain.” he added.
He only found out that he underwent a hemorrhoid surgery after it was completed and his mother-in-law was advised of the successful operation. His wife also had a successful surgery and gave birth to a healthy baby.
For his inconvenience, Wang was reportedly offered 5,000 yuan, or about $750, in compensation by the hospital for the mishap. However, the settlement was still being negotiated at the time of the report.
In an interview with the Bandao City News, an official from the hospital said that the error “should be shouldered by both parties, since Mr Wang is a grown up man.”
