A 54-year-old man in northeastern China has been sentenced to death for raping his neighbor’s 4-year-old granddaughter.
The convict, identified as Liu, abducted the child on the evening of Aug. 29 and returned her to her family the next day.

To their horror, the young girl came back with multiple bruises and bloodstains. They immediately notified the police.
The child was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Liu, on the other hand, was arrested later that day.

The family recalled Liu coming to their home just before the child’s disappearance to ask for a drink. Apparently, they failed to notice he had taken her with him.
On Dec. 2, the Intermediate People’s Court of Harbin, Heilongjiang province convicted Liu of rape, sentenced him to death and deprived him of political rights for the remainder of his life, according to Xinhua.

During the investigation, Liu reportedly confessed to sexually assaulting the child in a drainage ditch near a construction site.
It turns out that Liu had already served sentences for murder and rape. In their decision, the court ruled that he “failed to rehabilitate” and “caused serious damage.”

The young girl, who has multiple infections, remains in the intensive care unit fighting for dear life.
“She is still critically ill,” the child’s father, surnamed Zhou, told China News. “All of her organs have been infected and damaged. She is also suffering from kidney failure.”
However, the child’s doctor has been actively monitoring and treating her.
“She should be better. She will get better over time,” Zhou added. “I also trust the doctor and the government, and with so many kind people helping us, my child will definitely get better.”
