Chinese Man Becomes an Instant Billionaire After Bank’s Mistake
By Carl Samson
A Chinese man became an instant billionaire after one bank’s huge mistake — though only for few hours.
On Saturday, the man, surnamed Liu, opened his account at a Rural Commercial Bank in Changsha, Hunan Province.
All seemed to have turned out well, until the bank realized that one clerk erroneously transferred over 1.2 billion yuan ($174.5 million) to his account. According to Shanghaiist, the clerk was a new employee.
It did not take long before Liu received a call from the bank, asking him to return the huge money. He complied with the request.
Liu shared online (via South China Morning Post):
“It was already after 6 p.m. when I came back. All the staff at the bank were waiting for me. I was given a packet of cigarettes and a red packet [of money] when I left.”
At least Liu can say he was once a billionaire.
