An octogenarian in eastern China expressed his love to his wife of nearly seven decades on Valentine’s Day by spelling out “I (heart) U” in lights on the side of a skyscraper.
Against the backdrop of the 715-tall building in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, Qiao Dewei, 84, gave his wife, 83-year-old Liu Shixiu, a kiss on the cheek.
He donned a wedding suit for the occasion while she, sitting in a wheelchair, wore a white bridal gown and held a bouquet in her hands, reports the Qianzhou Evening News (via South China Morning Post).
“I love you,” Qiao told her. “We’ve been married for 67 years. We’ve gone through countless frustrations and difficulties, but we’ve stood by each other to this day. No matter how tough life got, we never had the slightest thought of divorce.”
The couple had reportedly never done anything romantic together or even said “I love you” to one another.
Liu’s health has declined and Qiao wanted to show her his love by donning the suit and having her wear a wedding dress — both things they never got to do together as they married 67 years ago without a ceremony or even a certificate.
Qiao’s grandson, surnamed Zhang, assisted his grandfather with the surprise by renting out all the rooms on one side of the hotel and turning on their lights to spell out the romantic message.
“My grandpa’s idea was very simple,” Zhang said. “He only wanted grandma to wear a wedding gown once in her life and to say ‘I love you’ face to face.”
