A thief was caught trying to steal from a bakery in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China but instead of working with police to bring the man into custody, the owner gladly offered him a free cake.
The incident happened last Wednesday when the bakery owner, only identified by her surname Wang, discovered that someone broke into her bakery. She immediately reported what happened to the police.
However, after checking the surveillance footage, she realized that the culprit did not take anything, according to Jiangsu Television via South China Morning Post. Wang ultimately dropped the report.
It seems that he didn’t break in to steal cash, he just wanted a cake. Maybe his family is too poor [to afford to buy one],” the owner said as translated by SCMP.
In the surveillance video, the man, believed to be in his 30s, can be seen walking inside the closed bakery shop and going straight for the cake display counter to take out four. The man then compared the four cakes on top of a table right next to the cash register.
He then realized that the cakes were not real and were only used as display models. Instead of going for the cash register, he took the cake models back to the display counter and left the store.
If you really need a birthday cake for your child, please just let me know – or call us and we’ll be happy to give you a cake for free,” the bakery owner said. “We all have difficulties sometimes but people don’t like to ask for help.”
