Citizens across China held solemn ceremonies on Wednesday to commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the Sept. 18 Incident, which marked the beginning of Japan’s brutal invasion of China. In Shenyang, the city where the incident occurred, citizens gathered at historical sites to pay their respects to the millions of war victims.
- The 14-year conflict: On Sept. 18, 1931, Japanese troops staged a false flag attack on a railway near Shenyang, blaming Chinese forces and using it as a pretext for a full-scale invasion. This act of aggression marked the beginning of a brutal conflict that lasted for 14 years, leaving a deep scar on the nation’s history.
- Reminder of the past: The 9.18 Historical Museum in Shenyang served as a focal point for the commemorations, with a bell that was tolled 14 times to symbolize the years of resistance against the Japanese aggression. The museum’s exhibits, which include the 9.18 Monument, serve as a stark reminder of the war’s devastation and the countless lives lost. In Nanjing, the Bell of Peace was rung at the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre, while sirens echoed through cities like Haikou and Chengdu.
