Caterpillar Inc. Announces the S60, an Extremely Tough Waterproof Smartphone With a Thermal Camera

There’s a new smartphone heading to market that anyone who appreciates extremely tough and well-made things will absolutely love.
It’s called the Cat S60 by Caterpillar Inc., a company mostly known for manufacturing heavy-duty machinery and engines, and will be the world’s first smartphone equipped with a thermal camera.
Caterpillar announced the new phone in a release ahead of the Mobile World Congress next week.
The S60 is an extremely rugged phone. It can survive a nearly 6-foot drop onto concrete with its Strengthened Die Cast frame. The company also called it the “most waterproof smartphone” and can survive in water as deep as 16 feet for one hour.
However, it’s the thermal camera that is the most interesting gadget. The camera will allow users to monitor heat related scenarios such as when a contractor wants to detect heat loss around windows and doors or when an engineer wants to identify overheating electrical circuits.
The thermal imaging also works as excellent night vision in complete darkness. The camera can pick up heat from up to 100 feet away and can also see through smoke.
The Cat S60 also includes a 13-megapixel main camera with dual flash and a 5-megapixel front camera. The phone is equipped with a super bright 7-inch HD display protected by Gorilla Glass 4.
The Android 6.0 phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 4G LTE and a 3,800 MAh battery. The phone also produces high quality audio for crisp sounds.
The Cat S60 will be available for the price of $599.

If this happened on campus, Stanford should issue a clear public update and specific safety actions.

Agree. People need facts and process, not silence. The school should confirm what is being investigated.

Also important to separate verified details from rumors so this does not spiral online.

The death threat part is extremely serious. Hoping law enforcement and campus security are already involved.

This is where official reporting and support channels need to be visible and easy to access.

Can NextShark keep a timeline thread here as updates come in? That would help keep context in one place.
