Carlos Edriel Yulo has been crowned champion of the men’s floor title at the world gymnastics championships, the first-ever Filipino to do so on October 12 in Stuttgart, Germany.
The 19-year-old athlete beat his competitors with a final score of 15.300 at the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat scored 15.200 and China’s Ruoteng Xiao finished with a score of 14.933, according to Rappler.
Yulo, who had already secured a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, expressed that he did not expect to win the gold medal at the competition.
“I’m super happy. I didn’t expect to win this medal. I’m crying on the inside,” he said via the Inquirer.
“There are not a lot of other gymnasts [in the Philippines]. I want them to come to our gym, and try gymnastics, because Filipinos, they like basketball, but we’re small. They should try gymnastics, it’s more fun.”
