An Asian woman living in Cape Town, South Africa, recently took to TikTok to share the mockery she received from a stranger.
About the video: Jin Kim, who goes by the handle @jkheehee on TikTok, shared a video on Monday capturing her encounter with a man she purported to be homeless on her way to work. The video shows the man outside her car looking at Kim through the window and posing with a slant-eye gesture, which is considered by many as offensive and racist mocking.
An everyday occurrence: According to Kim, such encounters happen to her every day when she travels to work.
“And it’s not just homeless people,” Kim writes in the in-video text. “I was even told to go back to China once.”
Still love for Cape Town: She clarifies in her caption that she still loves living in Cape Town, noting that it’s “about my experience” and asking commenters not to “make rude comments to ANY if you have not been in their position.”
Going viral: The video has since gone viral, amassing over 9.7 million views and generating thousands of comments.
“I’m from Cape Town and I also get made fun of. Sorry sister,” a commenter wrote.
“I am sorry you had to experience this, I hope it was coming from a place of ignorance and not from a malicious one,” another chimed in.
“I’m sorry on behalf of all South Africa,” commented another.
