Social media personality and reality TV star Bretman Rock attended the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Monday wearing a vintage dress that late R&B star Aaliyah wore to the same awards show back in 2000.
A tribute to a beloved singer: On Instagram, the 23-year-old makeup guru thanked designer Roberto Cavalli for lending the tiger-print slip dress and shared an image of himself wearing the attire.

  • “No one will ever rock it like Aaliyah,” Bretman wrote as a tribute to the beloved singer. “I love Aaliyah and am so honored to have been able to wear this 21 years after her. We love you.”
  • He noted that he cried in disbelief after he was told that he could wear the dress as he “never thought I would ever be able to wear this, let alone be in the VMAs.”
  • Speaking to Variety on the VMAs red carpet, Bretman said: “I just hope that Aaliyah is looking down at this little brown Filipino boy, giving her dress justice 21 years later.”
  • Bretman’s post generated support and praise from his followers and celebrities, including Brazilian singer Pabllo Vittar, Sicilian designer Fausto Puglisi, models Deon Hinton, Nikita Dragun, Winnie Harlow and Symone.
Remembering an icon: Aaliyah wore Cavalli’s piece to the 2000 VMAs, where she won Best Female Video and Best Video From a Film for her first movie, “Romeo Must Die.”
  • The singer, then dubbed the “Princess of R&B,” died in an airplane crash in the Bahamas, over a year later. She was 22.
  • Decades after her passing, Aaliyah remains a beloved artist with fans continuing their praise for her music.
  • Aaliyah’s music recently hit streaming services, with her 1996 album, “One in a Million,” reaching No. 10 on the Billboard album chart for the first time in the first week of September, reported the New York Times.
