An 11-year-old boy in China decided to bring his bicycle with him while sitting on it and riding an escalator, but it turned out to be a very idea.
A CCTV camera in Shenzhen captured the shocking accident as the boy stumbled down the escalator and lost his slipper as he staggered.
While it didn’t end in a fatality, the boy needed six stitches on his neck due to the injuries he sustained, according to Shanghaiist.
The boy’s case doesn’t help the rising number of escalator related accidents that have frequently occurred in mainland China and Hong Kong.
The Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) had to put up promotional caricature posters and videos in order to address the accidents which they believe to be more prominent among the youth and the elderly.
The MTRC revealed that there was a 3% increase in escalator accidents in 2017, according to The Standard. There had already been 347 escalator related accidents in just seven months, with 10 more incidents when compared to last year’s statistics.
Back in June, a 4-year-old boy gruesomely had his arm torn off while riding an escalator at a Nanchang shopping mall. There was also a case earlier in March when Hong Kong’s longest escalator malfunctioned and ended up injuring 18 people in the process.
With the rising cases of accidents that depict the dangers of escalators, it seems that thieves aren’t the only ones civilians should be wary of when visiting the local shopping mall.

If this happened on campus, Stanford should issue a clear public update and specific safety actions.

Agree. People need facts and process, not silence. The school should confirm what is being investigated.

Also important to separate verified details from rumors so this does not spiral online.

The death threat part is extremely serious. Hoping law enforcement and campus security are already involved.

This is where official reporting and support channels need to be visible and easy to access.

Can NextShark keep a timeline thread here as updates come in? That would help keep context in one place.
