Blackpink’s Jennie appears in new trailer for upcoming HBO drama series ‘The Idol’

  • Blackpink member Jennie appeared in a trailer for the HBO drama series “The Idol” that was released on Sunday.

  • The show, starring singer The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and Lilly-Rose Depp, follows Depp as a wannabe pop singer who begins a complicated romantic relationship with a Los Angeles club owner, played by Tesfaye, who is secretly a cult leader.

  • While YG Entertainment has made no official announcement about Jennie’s involvement, it appears she is more than just a cameo as she appears in multiple scenes in the trailer, hinting that hers could be a recurring role.

Blackpink’s Jennie made her Hollywood acting debut with her appearance in the trailer for the HBO drama series “The Idol.”

Blink and you just might miss her, however; Jennie makes appearances in the trailer at the 00:28, 00:34 and 00:59 second timestamps.

Captaining the show is “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson. Starring singer The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and Lilly-Rose Depp, “The Idol” follows Depp as a wannabe pop singer who begins a complicated romantic relationship with a Los Angeles club owner, played by Tesfaye, who is secretly a cult leader.

The series’ trailer is dominated by scenes of debaucherous parties, cocaine intake, Hollywood mansions and a voice yelling “More, more, more, orgy!”

Joining Tesfaye and Depp are Troye Sivan, Steve Zissis and Debbie Ryan as series regulars and Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga and Anne Heche in recurring roles. While YG Entertainment has made no official announcement about Jennie’s involvement, it seems she is more than just a cameo as she appears in multiple scenes in the trailer, hinting that hers could be a recurring role.

The series has already faced some speed bumps in its production. Last April, Variety reported that director Amy Seimetz exited her position after six episodes had completed production. Additionally, the cast and crew were shuffled, with HBO telling Variety: “The Idol’s’ creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show and they have aligned on a new creative direction. The production will be adjusting its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series. We look forward to sharing more information soon.”

No official release date has been announced for the show, but Deadline reported that HBO initially ordered seven episodes as of April with no further updates at this time.

This will be Jennie’s first Hollywood acting role and another milestone to add to her list of accomplishments. Her trailer appearance coincides with Blackpink’s recent announcement of their world tour and August album, which OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder reportedly contributed to. The K-pop quartet is also slated to host their first-ever virtual concert in partnership with “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile” later this July. They also made headlines last week for their Rolling Stone Korea interview where the writer described Thai member Lisa as “exotic” and claimed Jisoo is not the group’s “most talented” member.
