Beijing denies Trump’s claim that Xi vowed not to invade Taiwan during his presidency

Beijing rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him there would be no invasion of Taiwan during Trump’s term, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry firmly reiterating the position that Taiwan is an internal Chinese matter. The response came days after Trump recounted a conversation between the two leaders in a Fox News interview on Friday.
- Trump’s claims: Trump said Xi made the assurance during a phone call, allegedly telling him, “I will never do it as long as you’re president,” while describing China as “very patient.” Trump did not indicate when the conversation occurred, though the two leaders were confirmed to have spoken in April and June.
- Beijing responds: Speaking to reporters on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that “the Taiwan issue is purely an internal affair of China and how to resolve the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese people.” She reaffirmed Beijing’s position that while peaceful reunification remains the goal, China would not permit any attempt to separate Taiwan from the mainland.
- Taipei’s response: Taiwan’s government responded on Tuesday by distancing itself from the political exchange. Taiwan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei said the island’s security “must be achieved through its own efforts” and reiterated its focus on building stronger defense capabilities in the face of sustained pressure from the Chinese government.
