Documentary ‘Get Back’ proves Yoko Ono didn’t cause The Beatles’ breakup
A new documentary on the Beatles appears to vindicate Yoko Ono from long-standing allegations that she broke up the Fab Four.
Letting them be: Footage from the Disney Plus’ documentary “Get Back” indicates that the Japanese multimedia artist and activist was not a destructive presence during the development of the Beatles’ final album, “Let It Be.”
  • Ono, who married front man John Lennon in 1969, has long been accused by fans of causing the legendary group to disband.
  • Following the band’s breakup in 1970, she was often portrayed as a negative influence on Lennon and as someone who would interfere in the band’s affairs.
  • Scenes from the documentary show Ono minding her own business while Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr went about creating their final album.
  • McCartney even joked about how people would view Ono in the future: “It’s going to be such an incredible, comical thing in 50 years’ time … they broke up because Yoko sat on an amp.”
  • Years later, fans would come to believe that Ono created a rift between Lennon and McCartney and persuaded her husband to leave the band for good.
  • Speaking to Interview in 2013, Ono compared the public outrage she received to being falsely accused of murder.
  • “It feels like I was accused of something that I didn’t do,” she was quoted as saying. “It’s like you’re accused of murder and you’re in prison and you can’t get out.”
Who broke up the Beatles: McCartney told BBC Radio 4 that he doesn’t hold Ono responsible for the breakup, noting that he thought the pair made “a great couple” and that “there was huge strength there.”
  • According to McCartney, it was Lennon himself who initiated the split: “John walked into a room one day and said, ‘I am leaving the Beatles.’ Is that instigating the split, or not?”
  • McCartney said Lennon “wanted to go in a bag and lie in bed for a week in Amsterdam for peace… you couldn’t argue with that.”
  • In a recent interview with “60 Minutes,” Peter Jackson, who directed  “Get Back,” also explained why he thinks Ono never deserved public hate.
  • “The thing with Yoko… is that she doesn’t impose herself,” Jackson said. “She’s writing letters, she’s reading letters, she’s doing sewing, she’s doing painting, sometimes some artwork off to the side. She never has opinions about the stuff they’re doing. She never says, ‘Oh, I think the previous take was better than that one.’ She’s a very benign presence and she doesn’t interfere in the slightest.”
