“Be like Bill” is the new hilarious guideline for social media use that could seriously make the world a better place. The memes are the creation of Eugeniu Croitoru, a Moldovan man who lives in Milan, Italy. “Be like Bill” employs tongue-in-cheek humor to advise readers on things pertaining to social norms in real life and online behavior.
Croitoru’s work began appearing online late last year and exploded in popularity in January. His “Be Like Bill” Facebook page has nearly 1.5 million likes and counting.
When asked if he was the inspiration for Bill, Croitoru told BBC Trending:
“No, Bill is much better than me.”
Croitoru resides in Milan and writes cartoons with his colleague Debabrata Nath. He considers himself an “internet entrepreneur” and has created a number of comedy Facebook pages. The cartoonist described his vision of Bill to BBC:
“The idea is very simple. ‘Bill’ can be anyone who is smart and has common sense and doesn’t do annoying things. You’ll also notice Bill can be someone who makes fun of himself and jokes about others too occasionally.”
Bill has caught on internationally with memes translated into a number of different languages. Surprisingly, Bill has been renamed each time. In Arabic he is “Bilal” or “Bashir.”
