Ballerina shoes have traditionally been more of a pink or cream color, but a collaboration in the UK has developed shoes for non-white ballet dancers.
A dance company for Ethnic Minorities called Ballet Black and well-known manufacturer of dance shoes Freed of London have worked together to create shoes with colors that include “Ballet Bronze” and “Ballet Brown.”
Dancers of color use a technique called “pancaking” to applying foundation or powder to the shoes to match their skin tone.
The new colors have been over a year in the making.
“The Freed of London ethos has always been to develop shoes to meet the needs of each generation of dancer and these new colours continue to reflect this,” according to the collaboration website.
