Baby Koala Clings to Unconscious Mother in Surgery After Car Accident
By Laura Dang
A 6-month-old baby koala named Phantom clung to his mother during her life-saving surgery after she was hit by a car on Warrego Highway in Australia.
Lizzy, the mother koala, suffered severe injuries including facial trauma and a collapsed lung. Neither of the two had broken bones, and Phantom was unharmed. Lizzy’s collapsed lung had to be drained at the hospital and she was given antibiotics. Phantom stayed by his mom’s side throughout the entire operation.
The pair of koalas are recovering from the accident at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital founded by Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and his wife. The Australia Zoo reports mother and son are doing well.
