Hailed as one of the NFL’s best kickers, Korean football player Younghoe Koo just committed to another five years with the Atlanta Falcons.
The Atlanta Falcons officially announced yesterday, March 15, that they have re-signed Seoul-born kicker Koo, 27, to a five-year extension. According to the NFL, the deal is worth $24.25 million, which evens out to $4.85 million a year. This puts Koo as the one of the highest earners among kickers, second to only Baltimore Ravens’ Justin Tucker.
Both the Atlanta Falcons and Koo posted, “Koo is true for FIVE MORE YEARS” onto their Instagram accounts.
Koo has a 92.6% success rate, having made 87 of his 94 field-goal attempts since signing to the Falcons in 2019. Last season, he was among the NFL’s most accurate kickers, with three game-winning kicks against the San Francisco Giants, Miami Dolphins and the New Orleans Saints, bringing the Falcons to a 7-10 record for 2021.
Koo was not always recognized as one of the NFL’s best. When he first started his professional career in 2017 with the Los Angeles Chargers, his stay ended up being cut short when he was released after two devastating losses in which Koo missed a game-deciding field goal that would have tied the game or sealed a win for his then team.
With a five-year extension, Koo is committed to the Falcons long-term. As one of the NFL’s best kickers — and now most well paid —  Koo is expected to stir excitement from Atlanta’s football fans in the years to come.
