An elderly Asian man with a walker was caught on video verbally harassing an elderly woman of color on a New York City bus on Sunday for not giving up her seat.
Footage of the incident, posted online by Facebook user Chelsea Soriano, shows the elderly man berating the woman with racial insults. Both individuals seen in the video have not been identified.
“On top of yelling at this woman… he started ramming his walker on to this poor woman’s legs,” the caption of the video, written by Chris Soriano, read. “He then told her to get out and go back to her country. Mind you this woman spoke clearer English than he did.”
According to Chelsea’s post, she and her family were aboard the Q32 bus into Manhattan, when the man got on the bus and started “hassling the woman sitting down to give up her seat.” The man yelled at the woman and asked her if she could read.
“This woman was old and had trouble walking, the only difference is this old man used a walker, Soriano wrote. … he called us spicks and told us all to go back to where we came from. He also went on a rant about how Asians are better because they pay taxes and they never go to jail. Unlike us brown people.”
Soriano said they tried to intervene by telling the man to “just take the seat in front” but it became apparent that he was persistent in taking the woman’s seat.
“The woman also kept her ground so she was fine dealing with him, hence her calmness in the video,” the caption explained.
Indeed, the woman in the video appeared calm and unbothered by the man’s behavior.
Eventually, the man ended up sitting in the empty seat directly in front of the woman he had been yelling at.
Still, he continued to ramble on loudly at other passengers as shown at the end of the video.
