‘There is no Asian hate,’ according to bar-goers in a TikTok video

A TikTok video posted by @charleschoiboy shows two women in a bar telling the TikToker, who is of Asian descent, that Asian hate doesn’t exist.

#StopAsianHate: In the video posted on Oct. 8, an unidentified woman, who claims to be a nurse and repeatedly says that she is also a person of color because of her dad, tells the TikToker, “There is no Asian hate.” The clip currently has over 113,000 views.

The recording of @charleschoiboy’s experience at the bar begins with the woman saying, “I just heard ‘Asian hate,’ and I’m over that whole narrative because tell me what is the Asian hate?”
The TikToker engages her, and she continues, adding, “I mean I don’t see the Asian community out there protesting over Asian hate because there is no Asian hate.” @charleschoiboy responds by telling her that there have been protests for the cause.
An Asian woman sitting next to the woman later joins the conversation saying, “You feel oppressed?” to which the TikToker responds saying, “Yeah, I feel oppressed.”
The white-presenting woman then asks incredulously, “How? How do you feel oppressed?” When the TikToker responds that he has in the past been racially profiled and that there is hate speech and hate crimes happening, the woman asks, “Where is the Asian hate?”
The Asian woman then says, “I’m Asian and I don’t feel any hate.” @charleschoiboy then discusses the effects of coronavirus on the Asian community, detailing how Asians have been targeted in violent hate crimes over the past couple of years. The woman interrupts him and says, “No, that’s a false narrative.”

False narrative?: Asian hate has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic due to the coronavirus often being referred to as “Kung Flu” and the “China virus.”

Stop AAPI Hate released a report in August which documented that there have been over 9,000 reports of Asian hate crimes since 2020, NextShark previously reported.
AAPI Data estimated that 2 million Asian American adults have experienced harassment, a hate crime or discrimination since the start of the pandemic.
@charleschoiboy closes out the video saying, “It sucks 10 times worse when it’s your own people but apparently Asian hate isn’t real so I learned that tonight. Just because you don’t experience something doesn’t mean other people don’t experience it.”

Reactions: Many commenters showed anger at what the woman said and expressed confusion over the Asian friend that was with her.

One comment read, “‘I’m not white, just so you guys know’ is my thirteenth reason,” referring to the TV show “13 Reasons Why,” in which the main character kills herself. The creator responded in all caps, “No but actually.”
In all caps, another user wrote, “Not the token Asian friend.” Another comment echoed this sentiment, also in all caps, which read, “Not the self-hating Asian woman next to her.”
One user was suspicious of the woman’s racial identity, writing, “1. If she has to explain she’s a poc, she’s probably not poc.”
Another user wrote, “‘I’m not white’ girl like that makes your racism any better.”
One user criticized the Asian woman, writing, “‘I’m Asian, I don’t feel hate’ just because she DoEsNt FeEl HaTe doesn’t erase that fact that other Asians DO.”
“Bro the Asian person fighting back broke my heart [for real] from our own [people],” another comment said.
