Delaware Rep. Gerald Brady says he won’t run for re-election after using anti-Asian slur in email

State Rep. Gerald Brady (D-DE) said he is not running for re-election next year after someone sent his private email containing an anti-Asian slur to the media last week.

The details: In his statement on Monday, Brady explains his recent actions make it difficult to provide the kind of representation all residents of the 4th District expect and deserve, according to WHYY.

“All residents should have elected officials who serve and treat others with dignity and respect, whether it’s in public forums or in private communications,” Brady said. Brady was elected in November for a two-year term.
“I cannot in good conscience ask the voters to put their faith in me again after I betrayed theirs,” he added. “I can only humbly and unequivocally apologize again for my actions, for which I am solely responsible.”
House Democratic leaders issued a joint statement saying they are grateful that Brady has decided to announce he won’t be running for re-election. “We know that it cannot absolve his actions, but we hope it is a first step toward healing and addressing this situation,” the joint statement continued.
House leaders will also ensure that Brady completes the sensitivity training and connect with the Asian American community to rebuild trust during his last remaining months in office, Delaware Online reported.
Brady said in a statement that he plans to complete the sensitivity training and “work to make amends with the Asian American community.”

What happened: Brady referred to Asian women as “ch*nk broads” in a private email on June 27, NextShark previously reported.

He immediately took to his social media to apologize.
Many people called for his resignation following the email leak, including Yushu Fu, the founder of Facebook page Delaware Asian American Voice, who demanded accountability
“We’re talking about setting an example for future lawmakers. Not running for reelection? For me, it’s not enough,” Fu said.

A GoFundMe campaign, which aims to raise $1,000 to put up a billboard calling for Brady’s resignation, was also set up.
