Inside the Successful Life of the ‘Kim Kardashian of China’
By Laura Dang
Famous model and actress
Angelababy, or Yang Ying, was born in Shanghai, China, and signed a modeling contract with Style International Management at the age of 14.
Her name Angelababy is a combination of her English name, Angela, and her childhood nickname, Baby, for the baby fat she had when she was younger.
Aside from acting and modeling, Angelababy is also a businesswoman who has pursued several ventures that include opening her own nail salon and café in Hong Kong, reports the South China Morning Post.
Her Japanese-European-style restaurant, Baby Café, was a collaboration with director Tony Chan Kwok-Fai and is located in popular shopping mall Langham Place.
The Chinese model is also a venture capitalist and used her funds with AB Capital to purchase shares in e-commerce site Ymatou and the beverage brand HeyJuice.
According to the company’s post on Weibo, Angelababy will be assuming the role of product manager for Ymatou’s mobile app in hopes of promoting online sales overseas.
Her interest in HeyJuice, a company that produces healthy drinks with the use of biotechnology, is one example of the actress’s focus on lifestyle startups.
Angelababy ranked as the No. 12 highest earning Chinese celebrity on Forbes’ 2015 China Celebrity List. She earned 41 million yuan ($6.4 million) in 2015.
The Chinese beauty recently tied the knot with lead Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming earlier this month in a $30-million fairytale wedding held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
Huang was the first Asian celebrity featured in a Gucci advertisement and is also a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz.
In addition to working with brands, Huang is also an ambassador for China’s Panda Protection Research Center.
Angelababy is set to star in 2016’s “Independence Day: Resurgence.”
