An Asian American author has released a new children’s book inspired by the
Angel Halo Chang, who lives in the Bay Area, draws her craft from experiences in teaching preschool, being an education advocate and an interest in illustrating and storytelling.
The book, titled “You Are Invited!”, has themes centered on diversity, inclusion and creativity.
It follows “a fun party with pizza that floats, donut growing trees, fireworks made of popcorn … and everyone’s invited!”
“My first goal with the children’s book is to promote themes of diversity and inclusion. The title ‘You Are Invited!’ is a protest to the way the current administration has handled immigration policies,” Chang says.
Aside from the book, the author also recognizes the lack of diversity in the publishing industry and takes pride in “highlighting my role as an Asian American female children’s book creator.”
Chang also aims to support the idea that children’s books can be “just as powerful in shaping modern culture” as more common platforms, such as TV, music and movies.
Finally, she hopes to celebrate creativity with her new book, playing around with the word “dream” to imagine a fantastical party.
“The news could be so bleak right now, so I wanted to counter that with a colorful and imaginative environment where everyone’s invited,” Chang says.
“You Are Invited!” seeks $5,000 in funds by July 20 to be able to launch on Kickstarter.
