Airbnb is offering its patrons a chance of a lifetime to be among the “first people in thousands of years to spend the night on the Great Wall of China.”
Highlighting its 125% growth in the number of listings in China which generated 3.3 million guest arrivals last year, the company is holding a competition with the prize of staying in a specially designed home situated on the historic site.
The contest, which is made possible in collaboration with the Beijing Tourism Development Committee, is intended to “promote sustainable tourism to China by spotlighting wide-ranging efforts to preserve the Wall’s deep heritage and bring Chinese culture to life.”
To enter, participants need to write an “artistic and creative story of 550 characters maximum” on “why it is more important now than ever to break down barriers between cultures” and detail how you would go about building new connections.
People can submit their entries by 11:59 p.m. Beijing time on August 11 on the site’s “The Great Wall” listing page.
The four winners and their plus ones will spend a night each at the accommodations located in one of the towers from September 4-8.
Plexiglass will cover the ceiling and windows to make the moon and stars viewable inside the room with a large bed with fine quality linens and blankets, according to Forbes.
There will also be a dining table set up for a multi-course Chinese banquet, with each course representing an aspect of Chinese culture. The meals will also be accompanied by traditional musicians.
In addition to spending the night at the Wall, winners will also be awarded air tickets to Beijing from the nearest international airport (or ground transport if the winner lives within 100 miles of Beijing), a regular Airbnb accommodation between September 3-9 (except for the night on the Wall) and three meals a day.
Before departing, the guests will also be provided opportunities to learn other aspects of Chinese culture such as calligraphy and making their own customized stamp.
