Ahmaud Arbery was a 25-year-old runner who was gunned down while jogging in his Brunswick, Georgia neighborhood on February 23, according to The New York Times. Their weapons were “a .357 magnum revolver and a shotgun.”
Cellphone footage solidifying the murder was recently released and shown on CBS News, where the killers, a father and son, Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, were armed and seen driving up to him in their truck.
Arbery was unarmed when he was recorded struggling with Gregory, attempting to point the shotgun away from him. Travis was seen standing in the back of the truck and fired at Arbery until he was fatally shot.
Described as “self-defense” and saying that he “looked like the suspect in a string of break-ins,” the McMichaels took it upon themselves to confront him.
“This incident was at the least a case of overly zealous citizens that wrongfully profiled the victim without cause,” Pastor John Davis Perry II, the president of the Brunswick chapter of the NAACP, wrote in an email, according to the New York Times. “These men felt justified in taking the law in their own hands.”
Some of the tweets calling out the injustice and asking for everyone to sign a petition are shown below:
Allyship absolutely and unequivocally goes both ways.
An African-American man was chased and gunned down in broad daylight in his own neighbourhood, and his killers are walking free.
Please join me in taking a stand against ALL racism and prejudice. #JusticeForAhmaud

Tragically, it is still dangerous to be a black man in America. Most of us will never understand this. And for those that do, we get it…but don’t live it.

I hate waking up to another innocent Black man killed. I need my Asian Americans to sign this petition to get justice for Ahmaud. I need my Asian Americans to check in on our Black community. Our freedom is boundhttps://t.co/IK7sEjyjQX#justiceforAhmaud #asiansforblacklives

If you speak up against rising hate crimes against Asian Americans but you say nothing when it comes to what happened to Ahmaud Arbery, you need to do better.

The video of the killing Ahmaud Arbery is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my life. The fact that the men who killed him are not in jail is a an abomination. We need to demand that justice is served! #justiceforahmaud https://t.co/n37PUasAz5 pic.twitter.com/1f5FeWgQmQ
