ABC Orders Asian American Comedy Called ‘Lazy Rich Asians’

ABC has ordered a comedy pilot with the working title “Lazy Rich Asians,” reportedly influenced by the phenomenal “Crazy Rich Asians” on Monday.

The show is written by Jessica Gao, who won an Emmy for her work on Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty.”

According to Deadline, the single-camera show follows the life of Janet Zhao, a first-generation Chinese-American woman who struggles to set healthy boundaries with her crazy, exhausting family.

When Zhao’s wealthy grandmother dies and names her the sole inheritor, she is thrusted as the new matriarch of the family she has always kept her distance from.

ABC Studios, Imagine Television Studios and CBS TV Studios will produce the show. Gao will also executive-produce with Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, and Samie Falvey.

Falvey, now president of Imagine TV, ran ABC’s comedy department for years, developing series such as “Modern Family,” “American Housewife” and “Fresh Off The Boat.” The new show is Imagine TV’s first pilot order since becoming an independent studio.

Gao won Outstanding Animated Program at last year’s Emmys for writing the “Pickle Rick” episode of “Rick and Morty.”

She was one of the four female writers added to the show’s third season, the first time the Adult Swim series hired women.

“Lazy Rich Asians” is ABC’s 16th pilot (seventh comedy) this season. It is also the studio’s fourth single-camera order, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
