On Ella’s “Asian obsession”: Viewers of TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days” are accusing 29-year-old Ella from Idaho of “fetishizing” Asian men, particularly due to how she describes her romance with 34-year-old Johnny from China.

  • “The way Ella talks about Asians and Asian culture is super offensive to me,” one Twitter user wrote.
  • “I’m pretty sure if you replaced Johnny with another random Asian dude Ella wouldn’t notice the difference. She’s in love with her Asian fetish not the person who Johnny is,” said another user.
  • “Is it just me or is everything this Ella chick says kinda offensive or cringe?” another asked
  • “Yes!!! Liking the culture is one thing, fetishizing it and only wanting to date someone who’s Asian bc they’re Asian is creepy! Pretty sure she just picked the first asian man who liked her,” another user chimed in.

Hitting the “jackpot”: Ella, a cosplay fan who was introduced alongside Johnny on the third episode of the show’s fifth season, said her ideal man is “an exact blueprint of [her] favorite anime crush: he has red hair, green eyes and a fox demon inside him.”
  • According to Ella, she felt she “hit the jackpot” when she met Johnny on a social media page called “Asian men/White women.”
  • “Johnny and I officially became boyfriend and girlfriend about six months ago, but we have been talking for a year and a half, and we talk every single day,” she said.
  • Ella, who grew up on a ranch, said that she shares a lot in common with her new boyfriend. “I’m like this Western girl who has this Asian obsession. He’s kind of like an Asian man who has a Western culture obsession,” she noted. “And we both love anime.”
  • She added that while she wants to see Johnny in China, she is currently unable to due to pandemic restrictions. “Johnny is applying for a travel visa to visit me in Idaho,” Ella revealed. “I am so excited. I mean, I am crying right now, but I am so freaking excited for us to meet in person.”
  • Despite her mother’s concerns that men take advantage of her because of her self-esteem issues, Ella said she is still eager to take a risk.
  • Ella’s close friend Sonia considers it a red flag that Johnny, a divorcee, is willing to leave China and his 5-year-old son to be with Ella in Idaho for three months.
