A 101-year-old Indian athlete dubbed the “miracle from Chandigarh” bagged the gold medal at the 100 meter sprint at the World Masters Game in Auckland, New Zealand on Monday.
The elderly grandmother named Man Kaur celebrated her victory as she dashed to the finish line at an impressive record of one minute and 14 seconds –- over a minute compared to Usain Bolt’s world record at the 100 meter sprint back in 2009.
According to AsiaOne, although her victory was guaranteed, being the only participant belonging in the 100 years and older category, the audience cheered on her impressive feat. For her, it was not about how fast she can finish but the participation that was important.
“I enjoyed it and am very, very happy. I’m going to run again, I’m not going to give up. I will participate, there’s no full stop,” she said.
Quite obvious because of her pace, the centenarian definitely was more eager to beam her smiles at the audience that was supporting her than the actual run itself. Nonetheless, she served a great inspiration to those who watched the competition.
The Huffington Post said that Kaur first joined athletics competitions when she was 93. The publication said that it was her son, Gurdev Singh, who encouraged her to participate.
“Winning makes her happy,” said Singh.
The New Zealand Sports event attracted more than 25,000 participants.
