Simu Liu recently revealed that he prefers playing sports to spending time in the gym to stay active and fit.
Key details: Liu, 34, told GQ some of his secrets regarding fitness, his diet and how he maintains his physique.
His workout: The “Shang-Chi” and “Barbie” star shared that when he is filming, his regimen usually includes high-intensity interval training (HIIT). When he isn’t filming, he prefers “sports to being in a gym and lifting weights.”
“I don’t live for the gym,” he noted. “I don’t live to lift and get swole, you know what I mean?”
I grew up an athlete, I was on my varsity volleyball, basketball and rugby teams. … I put a home gym in my garage, which I use relatively infrequently, but I have a basketball net in my driveway, which I shoot hoops on every single day,” he added.
Preparing for “Barbie”: David Higgins, a trainer for “Barbie,” previously revealed to Insider that Liu, Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie and many of the film’s other cast members focused on Pilates, pull-ups, push-ups and plank challenges as part of their training.
About his diet: Liu told GQ that he is not a picky eater and that, thanks to his fast metabolism, he is “a bit more lackadaisical” when it comes to his diet.
“I really love all Asian food, which means like a lot of carbs,” he said. “I love steamed rice and I love beef stir fry. I love dumplings and noodles. I love Korean BBQ. It’s really just cycling between different Asian cuisines.”
He also talked about his passion for fried chicken, saying, I would have fried chicken every day if it was physically possible to not die doing it. There’s something about the crispy juiciness of fried chicken that is just something special. I love KFC.”
Other activities: Besides playing sports with his friends, Liu also enjoys scuba diving, which was introduced to him while he was training for a movie earlier this year.
