The 96th Academy Awards has released its full list of nominations for the 2024 Oscars, with some nods to Asian filmmakers including Hayao Miyazaki and Celine Song.
“Past Lives” nominations: A24 continues its Oscars success following last year’s triumph with “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which secured seven Oscars, including the coveted best picture award. The studio looks poised for yet another strong showing with its latest contender, Song’s “Past Lives,” which was nominated for best picture and best writing (original screenplay). The romance drama film competes with “Oppenheimer,” which leads the Oscar nominations with a total of 13 nods, followed by “Poor Things” with 11, “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10 and “Barbie” with eight.
Oscar snubs: Although “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie and Simu Liu did not earn individual nominations for their acting roles, the film was nominated for best writing (adapted screenplay), best picture, best costume design (Jacqueline Durran), best original song (“I’m Just Ken,” “What Was I Made For?”) and best production design.
May December” actor Charles Melton also did not receive a nomination, but the drama film did earn a spot in the best original screenplay category.
Animated films: When it comes to animated films, Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki’s “The Boy and the Heron” was nominated for best animated feature along with Pixar’s “Elemental,” Netflix’s “Nimona” and Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
Other nominations: Internationally made features such as “To Kill a Tiger” (India), “Perfect Days” (Japan) and “Godzilla: Minus One” (Japan) were also included in the best documentary feature film, best international feature film and best visual effects categories, respectively.
