A Dallas-area high school student was given funds raised by his friends for his 18th birthday to help him legally change his name.
Andi Bernabe, who came out as transgender about two years ago, shared the heartwarming moment on his TikTok (@fluffiestboy), according to Them.us. The video has been viewed more than 7 million times on Twitter and 2.6 million on TikTok.
In the video, Bernabe is seen being led into his school’s choir room as his friends wait to sing “Happy Birthday.” They then hand him an envelope and a fake birth certificate signed by the whole group.
“Since you’re a legal adult, we kinda raised enough money for you to change your name,” one of his friends said, which made Bernabe fall to the floor and break out into tears.
His friends planned a little party for Bernabe with gender reveal as the theme.
“All the decorations were ‘It’s a boy!’-themed. The cake was strawberry and they put blue icing on top,” the teen told Yahoo Lifestyle. “The joke was, ‘Oh, we accidentally made a pink cake for a girl but it turned out to be a boy.’”
Bernabe, who was assigned female at birth, wanted to legally change his name to Andrew. His friends managed to raise $300 for him, which is the exact cost of filing for a name change in Texas.
“I’ve wanted to change my name ever since I came out about two years ago,” Bernabe told them. “But I knew I wanted to wait until I’m well established into college… I want to make sure I know who I am, I’m still pretty young and don’t want to do something I’ll regret. At the moment, I definitely plan to change my name eventually, especially since my friends gave me the money.”
“It just made me feel so happy, overwhelmed, I couldn’t believe it, I really couldn’t,” Bernabe said. “My friends are phenomenal honestly. Since day one it’s just been constant support.”
