Asians Dominate the World’s Most Beautiful Faces of 2017

An actress from the Philippines and a K-pop superstar topped this year’s list of the world’s most beautiful and handsome faces by Independent Critics.

The top spot for “The 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2017” went to actress Liza Soberano, while Kim Tae Hyung, aka V of the popular K-pop group BTS, ranked number one on “The 100 Most Handsome Faces of 2017″.

The annual list, created by TC Chandler, is known for its diversity and is said to be a “representative of the modern ideal of worldwide beauty” according to its about page. Both lists, unveiled via Youtube on Thursday, feature numerous prominent Asians from different parts of the continent.

At the ‘Beauty’ top ten, Taiwanese singer Chou Tzuyu (from K-pop girl group Twice) took third place, K-Pop singer Im Jin-ah placed fifth, Chinese star Ju Jingyi (of pop girl band SNH48) ranked eighth, while Iranian Golshifteh Farahani ranked ninth this year.

Chinese celebrities Dilraba Dilmurat (Chinese of Uyghur ethnicity), Lauren Tsai, Lin Yun, Zhu Zhu, and Zhou Jieqiong came in at 26th, 46th, 49th, 75th, and at 99th places, respectively, while Filipina actresses Kathryn Bernardo, Jessy Mendiola, Nadine Lustre, and Kim Domingo landed at the 60th, 71st, 78th, and the 96th spots.

Japanese celebrities Minatozaki Sana (21st), Ishihara Satomi (34th), Komatsu Nana (38th), and Niki Niwa (84th) placed alongside Korean artists Jennie Kim of Blackpink (18th), Kang Seul-gi of Red Velvet (23rd), model Lee Sung-kyung (32nd), former Girls’ Generation member Kim Tae-yeon (40th), actress Bae Soo Ji (51st), Red Velvet’s Bae Joo-hyun (55th), actress Go Ara (62nd), Jessica Jung (69th) and Park Shin Hye (88th).

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Natasha Wilona (36th), Raisa Andriana (44th) and Chelsea Islan (93rd), Thailand’s Lalisa Manoban of K-pop group Blackpink (15th), Yaya Urassaya (30th) and Poo Praiya (66th), Malaysia’s Yumi Wong (57th), and India’s Priyanka Chopra (25th), Deepika Padukone (37th) Nargis Fakhri (53rd) Alia Bhatt (73rd) and Urvashi Rautela (89th) also made the cut. Palestinian-Algerian actress Nesreen Yousef Tafesh ranked at number 79 while Iranian model Mahlagha Jaberi snagged the 91st spot.

In the ‘Handsome’ top ten, Filipino actor James Reid placed fourth and South Korean Oh Se-hun from EXO took the ninth spot for this year’s list.

Also featured on the extensive men’s list are Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf (37th), Philippines’ Enrique Gil (61st), Taiwanese stars Godfrey Gao (21st), Mark Tuan of GOT7 (70th), Kazakh Dimash Kudaibergen (76th), Indian stars Sidharth Malhotra (31st), Hrithik Roshan (51st), Shahid Kapoor (85th), Indonesian actors Aliando Syarief (68th), Joe Taslim (92nd), Japanese celebrities Daniel Matsunaga (88th), Tereda Takuya (42nd), Jin Akanishi (66th), Yamazaki Kento (81st), Iwata Takanori (96th), Chinese celebrities Jackson Wang of GOT7 (35th), Lu Han (45th), Kris Wu (60th), and Thailand heartthrobs Mario Maurer (58th) and Nadech Kugimiya (79th).

The list also included notable K-Pop stars Jeon Jeong-guk of BTS (13th), BIGBANG’s Dong Young-bae (19th), Nam Joo Hyuk (23rd), EXO’s Kim Jong-in (38th), Choi Siwon (40th), KARD’s Big Matthew (47th), Seventeen’s Kim Mingyu (49th), BTS’ Jimin (64th), Seventeen’s Jeon Won-woo (72nd), Lee Min Ho (84th), and NCT’s ‎Lee Taeyong (99th).

SHINee’s Kim Jong-hyun, whose recent tragic death shocked the international music scene, placed at number 27.

TC Candler’s Independent Critics List has been selecting the most beautiful female faces for the past 28 years running, with previous notable winners including Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Emma Watson, and Emilia Clarke. Meanwhile, “The 100 Most Handsome Faces” was recently introduced in 2013, with previous winners Diego Boneta and Michiel Huisman topping the lists.

On its website, the organization stressed that the list “cherishes the feminine aesthetic and opens the world’s eyes to a unique, diverse and international collection of beautiful faces.”

“Unlike most other annual beauty rankings, The Independent Critics List is not a popularity contest and it is definitely not country specific,” it added. “It is not about the sexiest body or the most famous celebrity. Rather, the list attempts to inform and broaden public opinion instead of reflecting it.”
