Hello, everyone!

AAPI organizations in San Antonio, Texas are calling out county judge Republican candidate Trish DeBerry for a racial slur and reference she made toward her opponent, Democratic judge Peter Sakai.

DeBerry reportedly referred to Sakai as “Dr. No,” during a forum earlier this month. The reference is to a half-Chinese, half-German character from the “James Bond” franchise who is considered by many to be a racist depiction of Asian people.

Sakai, who has 25 years experience as a judge, says he took offense to the term DeBerry, a former television journalist, used. Others, like Genaline Escalante, president of the Asian American Alliance of San Antonio, took offense as well, responding with, “From our perspective, [DeBerry’s use of the nickname] was unequivocally deplorable and a racist statement.”
