6ABC’s Nydia Han posted a video on Facebook Live in response to the driver who almost hit her and yelled “this is America” at her last week in what was viewed as an act of racial discrimination towards the news anchor.
Han, in her Facebook video post, recalled how a female driver in Philadelphia almost hit her on Friday as she was crossing 20th Street on a green light while walking up Locust Street.
“A driver, coming the opposite direction on Locust, flew around the corner to make a left turn — clearly did not see me — screeched to a halt and missed hitting me by about half a foot,” the Action News Sunday co-anchor said.
Instead of apologizing, the driver got into a heated argument with Han about who was in the right. The unnamed woman insisted that she “had the right of way” when Han asked her, “Did you not see me?”
The two continued to exchange several words before the driver decided to leave. But as she drove away, Han heard the woman yell “this is America” through her open car window.
This clearly made Han angry, considering that she is of Korean descent, and was born and raised in the United States. “Yes, this is America,” the reporter said in her response video. “I am American. Born and raised, and I know America.”
I know America in ways that you probably don’t and never will,” she continued in her 4-minute video post. “I have seen America at its best and at its worst.”
Han continued to prove in her response video that she is more American than the woman who yelled at her. She said that she know her U.S. history very well, including the names of every cabinet member as well as the name of every state capital.
Did you think that this face would not stand up against you? Against racism? Against ignorance? Well, you were wrong. I am Asian American. I am strong, I am proud and I am speaking out against you today,” Han continued.
Han has been an award-winning American journalist for over 20 years. She is 6ABC’s consumer reporter and co-anchor of Action News Sunday, as stated on her profile page.
Han first joined the network in October 2002. She won an Emmy for her investigative report titled “Charity for Sale” in which she exposed a bogus and illegal charity organized by a man who claimed to be helping battered women and children.
This is America,” she said proudly. “I am American. I am proud of it. This is 2017, and you need to get with the program.”
