James Wan is Making a New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Film

Following the successful release of a new game last month, the Mortal Kombat video game franchise is gearing up for a new film to be produced by James Wan.

The movie, which will be shot later this year, will be helmed by first-time filmmaker Simon McQuoid in Adelaide, Australia. Pre-production on the movie will begin this month, Entertainment Weekly reports.

According to South Australia Premier Steven Marshall, it is set to become the biggest film production in the state’s history.

According to Engadget, McQuoid has previously directed a PS3 advertisement featuring famous PlayStation characters a few years ago.

“I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” Wan was quoted as saying. “Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”

Meanwhile, Wan, who is known for directing horror films (“Saw” and “The Conjuring”), and action blockbusters (“Furious 7” and “Aquaman”) is also set to executive produce and direct the debut episode of the upcoming Netflix series “The Magic Order.”

Considered as one of the most successful fighting franchises in the history of video games, “Mortal Kombat” is also one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, spawning many sequels and spin-offs consisting of several action-adventure games, animated films, and television series (animated and live-action), a comic book series, a card game and a live-action tour.

The popular fighting game has also been turned into two previous live-action films, “Mortal Kombat” in 1995 and “Mortal Kombat Annihilation” in 1997.

Wan and McQuoid have reportedly been attached to the reboot for several years.
