As many would attest, love is found in the most unexpected places.
For Singaporean Jayden Cheong, he’ll tell you his whirlwind romance started at a popular western food stand he enjoyed going to with his ex-girlfriend.
Back in 2012, Jayden and his then-girlfriend were regular customers at Wow Wow West located at the ABC Brickworks Food Centre in Jalan Bukit Merah.
At the time, Elizabeth Huang, the daughter of the stall’s owner, Eric Ng, would help out at the store whenever her schedule allowed.
Elizabeth, who was also in a relationship at the time, had always noticed Jayden but didn’t speak much with him.
In a recent interview with Zaobao, Jayden revealed that they eventually got the chance to have a little chat sometime later when he visited the store by himself.
Being a friendly store attendant that she is, Elizabeth soon struck up a conversation with the regular customer and they instantly hit it off.
During their conversation, she found out that Jayden had broken up with his girlfriend.
Since she was also already single then, she gave Jayden her business card. After a great first conversation, it did not take long before they began texting each other on a regular basis.
After three months of dating, the pair became engaged and soon tied the knot just two months later.
Jayden also left his full-time bank executive job to become a chef and help the family-run restaurant.
A couple of years later, the husband and wife team is now eyeing future expansions of their business, with Elizabeth using her sales and marketing skills to help promote and market the store.
“Sometimes I’m not sure if he fell in love with me or the food first,” Elizabeth said. “But either way, I didn’t expect him to change his careers to take up the life of a hawker too! It’s been six years since, and I’m so proud of the hard work he puts in every day from the time he wakes up at 6 am.”
