An engineering student from Hyderabad, India took his own life when his father, refused to buy him a video game worth 3,000 rupees ($47).
The 17-year-old, identified as G. Abhinay, incessantly asked his father, identified as G. Srinivas, to buy him a video game for a week before he ultimately decided to kill himself by jumping off the second floor of his house. According to NDTV, the Indian teenager even tried slitting his wrists before jumping to his death.
The father explained to the police that he refused to buy his son the video game since it can be a hindrance to the boy’s studies. In addition, the teenager’s mother already spent a lot of money on their house alone and they were not willing to add a video game to their expenses.
The case might officially be ruled as a suicide, but the police are still investigating the matter to see if the student was really willing to go that far for a video game.
While the incident might sound unusual, it’s actually quite common among teenagers in India.
Suicide among Indian teens is so frequent that the number of cases are rising at an alarming rate. According to Hindustan Times, India has the highest suicide rate for teenagers aged 15 to young professionals aged 29.
The causes for suicide in India range from students failing their examinations to young adults failing to seek employment. It is reported that India’s high suicide rate could represent the pressures of the country’s economic growth.
Another factor is that the country does not invest much on mental health and is experiencing an 87% shortage of mental health professionals.
It also doesn’t help that India is reportedly spending less than Bangladesh when it comes to mental health services.
