Actor Henry Golding hinted why the highly-anticipated sequel for the 2018 hit “Crazy Rich Asians” has long been delayed during a recent interview with Insider
Getting started: Golding, who plays the film’s lead male character, Nick Young, said in jest that Warner Bros. would need to “lock down” director Jon M. Chu, 41, to make the movie.
  • The 34-year-old actor said while people assumed the actors were too busy doing other projects, “It’s Jon Chu that you got to lock down.”
  • Chu has been tied up to multiple film projects, including his latest film, “In the Heights,” which was officially released in U.S. theaters and on HBO Max last week.
  • Golding, who said Chu has “been a busy, busy boy,” has also found work elsewhere, starring in high-profile projects such as the upcoming “Snake Eyes” from Paramount and “Persuasion” from Netflix.
Stuck in development hell: Previously reported to be shot back-to-back last year, the next two films based on Kevin Kwan’s novels “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems” have yet to start production.
  • In 2019, “Crazy Rich Asians” co-writer Adele Lim left scriptwriting duties on the film’s sequels following a pay dispute, NextShark reported.
  • Lim had a starting offer of $100,000-plus to pen the sequels, while co-writer Peter Chiarelli was offered $800,000 to $1 million.
  • Chu wrote an open letter to express his support for Lim, whom he chose to write alongside Chiarelli for the first film.
  • Last year, Golding revealed to Digital Spy that Chu confirmed that the sequel’s script was still unfinished.
As of this writing, Warner Bros. has given no official confirmation on actual production or release dates for the sequels.
