Good Samaritan Donates 500 Face Masks to Police in Wuhan, Then Speeds Away

A video of a good Samaritan leaving multiple boxes of face masks at a police station has become widely shared on Chinese social media.

The unidentified do-gooder can be seen going to a police station in Anhui province, where he reportedly left 500 face masks in a bid to help people protect themselves against the novel coronavirus.

The station is situated near the border of Hubei province, which is the location of Wuhan, the city where the virus originated.

The man left the masks at the reception desk and then thanked the officers for their services before jogging away. Two policemen are then shown chasing the anonymous donor but he was already gone when they stepped out. Unable to catch him, the officers offered him a salute to thank him for his deed.

The video, which has remained unverified, was also shared by multiple media outlets in China. After emerging on Chinese social media, the footage went viral with the hashtag #coronavirus.

The man earned praise for his kind gesture on local platform Weibo.

“He puts the sellers who overprice for masks to shame,” one user commented.

“I believe there are more good people than bad,” another user wrote.

The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV or Wuhan coronavirus) has spread to 22 countries and territories worldwide, with 8,246 confirmed cases and 170 deaths.

Wuhan, which has a population of over 11 million people, went on lockdown on January 23, shutting down transport links. The neighboring city of Huanggang was also placed in quarantine, while Ezhou closed its train stations, placing around 18 million people in isolation.
