An elderly woman was called multiple racial slurs and shoved down to the ground by an unknown man, and her daughter is now calling for justice online.
On Wednesday afternoon, an unidentified man wearing a red jacket verbally assaulted and physically shoved Maggie Cheng’s mother on Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Flushing, Queens.
The New York Police Department told NextShark that the woman was waiting at a bakery when the suspect approached her. After the incident, the suspect fled. No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
In an Instagram post, Cheng said her mother hit her head on the concrete and passed out on the floor, causing her to receive 5-10 stitches on her forehead. She was treated at Booth Memorial Hospital, according to the police.
“I am heart broken and devastated,” Cheng wrote of the attack, “Hate crime has no place in our community. How you go up against a 5’3 110-115 lbs lady? How no one holds this person down on Main street is another question. Especially in an asian community.”
In another post, Cheng also shared surveillance footage of the incident.
Cheng’s mother’s attack is the latest in the recent wave of racially-motivated attacks against elderly Asian Americans.
