Customers Buy Out Doughnut Shop Every Day So Owner Can Be With His Sick Wife

Customers of a doughnut shop in Seal Beach, California have been buying out doughnuts by the dozens early in the morning to allow its owner to be with his sick wife.

John Chhan has been running Donut City with his wife Stella for three decades until recently, when she developed an aneurysm.

Both refugees from Cambodia, the couple arrived in Orange County in 1979, CBS reports. They have been serving doughnuts together since they opened their shop at the Pacific Coast Highway.

Weakened by her condition, Stella is now in rehab, requiring continuous care and attention.

Chhan, who began manning the store alone when Stella became ill, says he needs to rush to be with his wife as the shop sells out of doughnuts.

“She can talk, she can write,” Chhan told CBS. “Right now she’s trying to… eat something.”

Upon learning of Stella’s condition, Donut City’s regular patrons have decided to help out by a purchasing a dozen doughnuts at a time to help the store sell out early every day.

Some customers have even offered to set up a GoFundMe account for the couple but Chhan refused, saying all he needed is to spend more time with his wife.

“It’s a blessing really,” one customer was quoted as saying. “We need more people like that to just help everybody out in whatever need they have.”

Others are helping spread the word via newsletters and by word of mouth, convincing everyone to buy doughnuts one dozen at a time.

With customers helping out, Chhan is able to close his shop as early as 8 a.m. and visit his wife at the rehabilitation center immediately after.
