Former Hong Kong Chief Executive Chun-ying Leung (aka CY Leung) may have been retired for several years now but he is still closely monitoring the recent developments in the troubled city-state.
When news emerged that some protesters threw a Chinese flag into the sea on Saturday, he was among the first to condemn the act on social media.
It was reported that the flag the protesters threw was the Chinese national flag flying on the Tsim Sha Tsui side of Victoria Harbour, which they replaced with flags bearing the words “Hong Kong Independence.”

In Hong Kong, desecrating or insulting China’s national flag or emblem is a crime punishable by a prison sentence of up to three years.
Leung, who took to Facebook to call out what he described as “extremist” protesters, also offered a reward of 1 million Hong Kong dollars ($127,000) for information leading to their capture and prosecution.

CY Leung also caught the attention of netizens last week when he posted a photo of a man wearing a “USA” shirt at a protest outside a Sha Tin police station in what many saw as an attempt to link “foreign forces” to the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, a group of Beijing supporters sang the national anthem and raised the Chinese flag in Tsim Sha Tsui on Sunday to replace the one that had been taken down, reports South China Morning Post. Then on Monday evening, a group of protesters returned to the same flag pole, tore down the flag, and once again threw it into the harbor.
