Chinese YouTuber Gets Jail Sentence After Tricking Homeless Man into Eating Toothpaste-Filled Oreo

Kanghua Ren, who is based in Barcelona, Spain gave the cookies to a man identified only as Gheorghe L. who was a former pastor in Romania.
The prank, which Ren carried out in January 2017, has since been deleted from his YouTube channel, but netizens managed to make copies.
In the video, Ren is seen stuffing the cookies with toothpaste before taking them out to the streets — with 20 euros ($25) later for the unfortunate taker.
“Maybe I’ve gone a bit far, but look at the positive side: this will help him clean his teeth,” Ren, who goes by the YouTube moniker ReSet, said. “I think he hasn’t cleaned them since he became poor.”
Gheorghe L., who felt sick and threw up five minutes later, was reportedly offered 300 euros ($368) to stay silent so that Ren can “reestablish his image” and “ingratiate himself with public opinion.”
Ren’s original video generated €2,180 ($2,675) in advertisements, according to court documents.
On Friday, a Barcelona court found him guilty of violating moral integrity, sentencing him to 15 months behind bars.
Ren must also pay 20,000 euros (about $23,000) to Gheorghe L. in compensation. Additionally, his YouTube channel and other social media accounts will be suspended for five years.
“This was not an isolated act,” said judge Rosa Aragonés, who also heard that Ren filled sandwiches with cat feces before feeding them to schoolchildren and elderly people in another sick prank.
However, it’s unclear if Ren would actually serve time in prison, as Spanish law normally suspends sentences under two years for first-time offenders in nonviolent crimes, The New York Times noted from Madrid.
Ren’s YouTube channel remains active as of this writing.
