Jack Ma, the richest man in China, is not liking being rich. In fact, he finds it a great pain. While I’m sure most people who aren’t billionaires and are struggling for money would say being rich is the complete opposite, billionaires do struggle in a different way.
Ma sat down with CNBC at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China and discussed why being a billionaire is really an annoying side effect for his main goal of being a respected businessman.
“It is a pain. Especially Forbes, I don’t know which magazine said I’m the richest guy of China. This is a great pain. Because I never thought I would be and I don’t want to be. I just want to do the things I want to do.”
“People say, ‘Well Jack, please, rich people’s good.’ Yeah, it is good, but not that — richest man of the world — of China. It’s a great pain, because when you are the richest person in the world, everyone is surrounding you for money.“
Being rich also lets you know who your real friends are, and being rich labels you for life.
“I have a lot of friends, but I think, today when I walk down the street, people look at you in a different — I want people to see this is entrepreneur, this is the guy is doing– having fun, of himself. And I want to be myself. But today, people probably have a big demanding on you, on many other things.”
Jack Ma, who started Alibaba under very humble circumstances, never did it for the money. Haters would say he’s ungrateful, but those of us who are smarter can truly understand the adage “Mo’ money, mo’ problems.”
