Asians Allegedly Attacked By Mob on Philadelphia Subway in Disturbing Video

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated with a statement from the Philadelphia Police Department.

On Thursday, a disturbing video was shared on social media platforms that reportedly showed a group of individuals allegedly surrounding and assaulting an Asian couple or group that was huddled on the ground trying to protect themselves.

According to those who shared the video on social media, the incident allegedly occurred in the Philadelphia subway.

Instagram user @daasoamhiphop posted the video with the caption:

“ASIAN KIDS GOT PUNCHED, KICKED AND STOMPED ON in a subway car in Philadelphia. Respect to the Asian dude for covering the girl with his body. This shit needs to stop.”

Twitter user @SakuraiMitsukii posted the video on Twitter.

Details on this story have so far remained unconfirmed. It is not currently known when or where this incident took place or the context surrounding it. So far, despite many tags on social media, the Philadelphia Police Department and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney have not released a statement regarding the video.

Staff Inspector Sekou Kinebrew of the Philadelphia Police Department told NextShark the department became of aware of the incident Wednesday morning:

“We are aware of the disturbing video, which depicts the assault of a young man and woman, by what appear to be a group of juveniles. At this point, it does not appear that the incident was reported to police. However, violent acts such as this are inexcusable and should not be tolerated. We encourage the victims or any witness to contact police. We also encourage the parents of those involved to take appropriate and responsible measures.”

The video comes at a tense time of widespread harassment and assault of Asians around the globe due mostly to coronavirus-related fear.
